Topic Info

The homeless. We see them in every city across the country. We wrestle with how to react to the signs they hold at intersections, their open hands on the sidewalks, and their sleeping forms beneath storefront windows. We ask ourselves how we can help and, sometimes, whether we should help, as cautionary words like “don’t give them money, they’ll only spend it on drugs,” echo through our minds. Two things we know for sure: Homelessness is no longer just an urban problem and it isn’t going away by itself.

In this first in a two-part series on homelessness, we’ll explore our reasons for addressing the “homelessness problem,” which might range from concern about the individuals to fear that their presence will negatively impact our property values, safety, and business sales. Pre-reads for this first session are designed to provide a foundation for our discussion through information about the who, why, and where of homelessness.

In the second part of the series, we’ll then ask what we can and should we do about it?

Please come prepared to share personal experiences related to homelessness and the reasons you believe homelessness is an issue we should address.
